It was a thrilling afternoon of athletics action today (April 23rd) for the 2023 edition of the 123.ie National Road Relay Championships hosted by Raheny Shamrock AC on the now familiar lap route starting on Wade’s Avenue in Raheny.
The senior races were stacked with star names, and they didn’t disappoint with double Olympian Michelle Finn playing a leading role for Leevale on their way to claiming the gold medal in the senior women’s race (20.50).
Finn, who led off the triumphant Cork team, was joined on the Leevale team by the ever-consitent Lizzie Lee and Niamh Moore.
Rathfarnham W.S.A.F.AC (21.04) secured yet another silver medal with the team of Carla Sweeney, Louise Gaffney, and Zoie Richie racing superbly to finish 10-seconds ahead of ahead of the bronze medal winning team from Raheny Shamrock (21.15 – Iseult O’Donnell, Niamh Kearney, and Lucy Barrett).
The senior men’s race was blown apart by an outstanding performance from Clonliffe Harriers who backed up last year’s success with a runaway win to cross in 37.12. Conliffe looked favourites on paper and delivered in spades with Stephen Cashin, Eoin Pierce, and Efrem Gidey putting Jayme Rossiter in prime position to ‘bring it home’ for the defending champions.
The battle for the remaining podium places was a thriller with Donore Harriers taking silver. A brave final leg from Brian Kelly secured bronze for St Abbans with a dip for the line.
Sportsworld Running Club put up a bold defence of their women’s O35 title in the opening race of the day, eventually relinquishing their grown to Raheny. Finn Valley would take silver with a bronze medal going to the defending champions.
Raheny would also take home the women’s O50 title in one of the most dominant performances of the day.
The men’s masters O35 title was another battle royal between two of last year’s top-three placed clubs. Brothers Pearse managed to come out on top this year with last year’s gold medal winners from East Cork AC having to settle for silver.
Rathfarnham W.S.A.F. AC claimed their first medal of the day in the men’s O50 race, taking a brilliant gold which they added to with a silver medal in the senior women’s race later in the day
Athletics Ireland would like to congratulate all of our competitors and thank Raheny Shamrock AC for hosting these championships.
