International Triathlon Weekend Round Up

ByEmma Porter |

Triathlon Ireland had three athletes racing the World Triathlon Para Cup in Taranto, with all three athletes achieving podium positions.

Tom Williamson who made his international debut only last week and claimed 6th in the PTS5M in Malaga, raced himself onto an international podium in only his second World Triathlon Para Cup this weekend.

Williamson exited the water in lead position, however, Thibault Reby managed to claw back enough time on the bike segment to secure the overall win by a narrow seven seconds.

Cassie Cava was back in action, backing up last weekend’s performance with another podium performance. Again the Irish athlete led the race out of the water, although there was no denying Kristy Weir the win with a dominant run.

Judith MacCombe was also back in action this weekend, taking home a silver medal having missed the gold by a single second in what was a savage chase for gold after leaving the water in 3rd position. MacCombe and her guide produced a strong bike and the fastest run split of the day to be denied gold on the line. The result brings to a close a strong second half of the season with three medals from three races.

World Triathlon Cup Miyazaki

Meanwhile, in Miyazaki, McConnell, Edgar, and White finished their block of racing in Asia.

The Miyazaki Olympic Distance World Triathlon Cup saw McConnell forced to DNF, while Edgar finished the Men’s race in 32nd position, with White in 40th.

McConnell takes a break after a long season of racing before refocusing her efforts for 2024. Edgar who’s current World Ranking has climbed to 160 this year, said on social media afterwards, that a poor swim left him chasing all day, however, the result was his best on this Asian block in the strongest field. With two more races left on his calendar this year, he is listed in the Hong Kong Asia Triathlon Cup in November. White is entered in the World Triathlon Cup Vina del Mar, Chile in November, although his most recent social posts state a focus on regrouping over a strong winter.
