Oisin Joyce (Lake District AC) and Elizabeth Ndudi (Dundrum South Dublin AC) advanced to field event finals on the opening day of the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru.

Ballinrobe teenager Joyce booked his place in Thursday night’s Javelin Throw final thanks to a best throw of 69.85m in the second round of the competition.

The Mayo man, who was competing in Group A of qualification where he had the fifth furthest throw, then faced an anxious two hour wait until Group B concluded while he awaited his fate. Ultimately, he ended up in ninth position, inside the top twelve, which was good enough to advance.

Earlier, Ndudi had advanced to the final of the Women’s Long Jump following a similarly nervous wait in qualification.

The European U20 champion in the event jumped a best of 5.95m (-0.3m/s) in cool conditions to secure the final spot of twelve on offer for tonight’s final.

Ndudi will be hoping for a big improvement and will aim to push towards her 6.68m national senior record which she set back in April.

On the track, Sean Aigboboh (Tallaght AC) showed that his star continues to rise by putting in two strong performances in the Men’s 100m.

The 18-year-old clocked 10.55s to place third in his heat, qualifying for the semi-finals as a fastest non-automatic qualifier. Racing in the second of three semis, he finished eighth in a time of 10.65s, failing to advance to the final.

There was disappointment for the Irish Mixed 4x400m Relay team in the earlier session, as they came up short in their attempts to make the final, however they did gain valuable global championship experience. The quartet of Conor Kelly (Derry Track Club), Daisy Walker (Monaghan Phoenix AC), Sean Doggett (Athenry AC) and Niamh Murray (Bray Runners AC) clocked a time of 3:26.40 to finish fourth in their heat, ranking 15th overall.
