A strong team of 47 swimmers, featuring a host of exciting young athletes, all part of Swim Ireland’s National Junior Pathway Programme, competed at the 2025 Arena Lisbon International Meet over the weekend. Over the two days of racing, the team secured six top-three finishes from four different swimmers, as well as an impressive twenty-two top-10 finishes.
Sharks-Galway swimmer Niamh Connery topped the podium in the Women’s 200m Breaststroke, securing the gold medal with a time of 2:34.63. Connery followed up with a bronze in the 100m Breaststroke, securing it in a time with a time of 1:11.99.
National Centre (Limerick) swimmer Denis O’Brien delivered a fine performance in the Men’s 800m Freestyle event, finishing second to win silver with a time of 8:28.07, along with three other top-ten finishes. His National Centre teammate, Lucy O’Brien, was also in fine form over the weekend, winning bronze in the Women’s 50m Butterfly (28.34), along with placing in the top eight in three other events.
Bangor’s Adam Bradley made two trips to the podium, the first coming after finishing second in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke (1:02.96), followed by another second-place finish, this time in the 200m Breaststroke (2:19.24).
Many of the athletes will now turn their attention to the opening domestic meet of 2025, the McCullagh International, taking place from 21st-23rd February in Bangor.
