The first multi-sport National Championships for 2025 takes place this Sunday, 2nd March hosted by Limerick Triathlon Club at the University of Limerick.
Sunday’s event signals the first in a trio of top tier races hosted by Limerick TC throughout the race calendar; the long running Joey Hannan Sprint Triathlon, and the iconic Hell of the West standard distance triathlon later in the summer.
The Course
Sunday’s course is a sprint distance starting with a 4.6 kilometre run around the University of Limerick Campus, a 19 kilometre out and back bike course, and finishing with a 4 kilometre run. The bike course will take athletes from UL Arena to the Dublin Road via the Vistakon Roundabout toward the turnaround point on Murroe Road, turning around at the 9.5 kilometre mark.
The Contenders
With almost 300 athletes on the start list, some first class racing and a super atmosphere are sure to be on the cards for Sunday morning.
Current Women’s National Champ Emma O’Brien is absent from the start list, and so there will be a new Duathlon National Champion for 2025. Plenty of contenders lining up means that we will be expecting some exciting racing come Sunday morning. Piranha’s Megan Roberts and Crosshaven’s Meadhbh Moynihan were fifth and sixth respectively at last year’s national championships in the Phoenix Park, and both will be hoping to move up this year. Waterford’s Aine Kinsella already has one win under her belt this year and is always in the mix. Limerick’s own Roisin Kelleher was third in last year’s Duathlon National Series, can she take a title on home turf? Also among the contenders are Aisling Wyer from Naas, Pulse TC’s Aimee Carr, Predator TC’s Nessa Mangan and Izabella Chidlow who is currently training at the National Triathlon Centre.
In the men’s event, James Graham will be returning to defend his 2024 title. Graham will be joined by plenty of the top run, bike, run athletes from all over Ireland. Multiple time national champ Niall Cornyn won in Tramore a few weeks ago. Eden’s Enda Bagnall was third in the first round of the Duathlon National Series, and is always one to watch on a duathlon start line. Dave Higgins, Eoin Bailey and Galway’s Ruaidhri Geraghty will also be on the start line in UL. The National Triathlon Centre will be well represented on Sunday, with Ethan Doherty, Mathys Bocquet and Sean McMahon all in attendance.
