Sarah Healy (UCD AC) and Andrew Coscoran (Star of the Sea AC) have secured sixth placed finishes in their respective 3,000m finals at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, this evening.
Healy was right in contention throughout the women’s 3,000m final, only losing some ground on the leaders heading into the final 400 meters as the eventual winner Freweyni Hailu of Ethiopia injected her race-winning-kick. Healy would cross in a time of 8:40.00 for sixth place overall, backing up her recent European indoor championship winning performance in Apeldoorn just thirteen days previous.
The medals went the way of Freweyni Hailu (ETH) 8:37.21 gold, Shelby Houlihan (USA) 8:38.26 silver, and Jessica Hull (AUS) 8:38.28 bronze.
Andrew Coscoran ran arguably his best championship race in the final the men’s 3,000m. The race saw Coscoran run on bravely for sixth having had his momentum checked several times as the race heated up over the final 600 meters. The Star of the Sea AC athlete would cross in a time of 7:48.53 (6th) ahead of teammate James Gormley (Carmen Runners AC) who clocked 7:56.43 for 13th.
The men’s 3000m medals went to Jakob Ingebrigtsen (NOR) 7:46.09 SB gold, Berihu Aregawi (ETH) 7:46.25 SB silver, and Ky Robinson (AUS) 7:47.09 bronze.
Irish interest at these championships will now turn to Sarah Lavin (Emerald AC) who is set to go in the heats of the 60m hurdles in the early hours of Sunday morning (2.25am Irish time).
Lavin finished fifth in the final at these championships in Glasgow last year and will be hoping to improve her season’s best of 7.92 seconds which saw her place fourth at the European Indoor Championships two weeks ago.
Should she advance from the heat, both the semi-final and final will take place in the Sunday evening session to conclude the championships.
