Cross Country National Points Series Begins This Weekend

ByEmma Porter |

Team WORC will host the first of five rounds in this year’s series, as they welcome riders to Tonygarrow, Co. Wicklow. The site last year hosted the Cross Country National Championships, and provided some fantastic racing across all categories.

Volunteers from Team WORC have put in extensive work in recent weeks to improve the course and features. The course this year opens with a steep climb across grassy terrain taking riders out of the start finish area into a fox glove forest. From the highest point on the course there is a flowing descent with a bridge crossing, rock drops and berm rides. Following the descent is a much-needed farm road connector that allows for a breath, a drink or an attack. Dropping into the second descent brings on more rocks and berms. Once through the descent there is a gravel climb into the final forest ascent which is steep and technical. The final descent has more rocks, a bridge crossing and rock ride into the start finish.

Last year’s Senior 1 Open overall winner Daniel Brickenden will return looking to defend his title, but will face stiff competition from several of last year’s contenders, as well as UCD’s Ruairi Byrne who has had an incredibly strong start to his road season.

Ryan Daly will feature in the Junior race, coming into the series with several races abroad and a strong winter on the cyclo-cross bike under his belt already.

With four Senior Open categories and three Senior Women categories, as well as a whole slate of Youth races, the series this year has something for everyone.

Entries for this Sunday’s race in Wicklow are still open HERE.
