Hell of the West Race Report

ByEmma Porter |

Hell of the West was first ran in 1985, and so this year celebrates 40 years of triathlon in Kilkee. Hell of the West has long been established as one of the iconic Irish triathlons and has a history steeped in the legacy of the sport.

Speaking during the race briefing race director Mark Kennedy spoke about the history of the race and mentioned that, having taken a break for two years during Covid, the event will further celebrate 40 runnings in 2027. This year Michael and Joan Griffin, organisers of that first event, raced the 2025 iteration.

Daly & Higgins win in kilkee

David Higgins lead from the off, putting in a convincing performance across standard distance for the second time this season, also winning at TriAthy. Podium regular and previous Triathlon National Series winner Donncha Kiely was second, and Mallow TC’s Christopher Horgan in third.

Galway TC’s Laura Daly had her first ever win in the Triathlon National Series, putting in a strong bike split to gap the field and hold on for the run. Aine Kinsella (Waterford TC) chased on the run and managed to close the deficit out on the challenging run course, ultimately running out of road for second place in Kilkee. Cork Triathlon Club’s Maura Barry made up ground after heading onto the run behind TriLakes’ Mary Corless and Limerick’s Roisin Kelleher, overtaking to secure third.

Lynne algar memorial trophy

A very special cup is awarded to first Limerick Triathlon Club woman home, the Lynne Algar Memorial Trophy. Lynne made an incredible contribution to triathlon in Ireland and was a member of Limerick TC, as well as a cherished friend and colleague to the team in Triathlon Ireland.

This year the cup will be passed from 2024 recipient Kathryn Fahy to Roisin Kelleher, who finished in fourth this year.
