Niamh Allen (Leevale AC) finished an impressive 18th in the elite women’s 10k at the inaugural European Running Championships in Leuven, Belgium this morning. The Cork athlete was the highest placed Irish finisher on the second day of the championships, crossing the line in a time of 32:25.
Allen, who recently won the national title over the distance in Dunboyne, went through 5k in 24th position but moved up through the pack in the second half of the race, finishing well.
Her teammate Emily Haggard-Kearney (North Belfast Harriers) also ran strongly throughout to finish in 30th in a time of 32:51.
Three Irish athletes also featured in the men’s elite race. Cormac Dalton (Mullingar Harriers) was the top Irish finisher placing 24th in 28:49. Sean Tobin (Clonmel AC) went from 55th at halfway up to 41st at the finish, clocking 29:22 in the process. Meanwhile, Keelan Kilrehill (Moy Valley AC) was 47th, running a time of 29:36.
Yesterday at the championships, Efrem Gidey (Clonliffe Harriers) finished an agonising 4th in the elite men’s half marathon, missing out on a medal by just one second. Ann-Marie McGlynn (Letterkenny AC) was 26th in the elite women’s half marathon.
