Athlone 2025 National Aquathlon Championships

ByEmma Porter |

Athlone town centre was the venue for this year’s National Aquathlon Championships. Hosted by Athlone Triathlon Club as part of the town’s RiverFest celebrations, the event marks the return of multisport racing to the heart of Athlone. Having previously hosted European Championships, Athlone has a great legacy of triathlon racing.

Killalea & Carr Aquathlon Champs

In the men’s event, Ross Killalea and Sean McMahon were first out of the water and with the pair having a two minute lead at that point, the championship title would come down to a foot race between the two. Midland TC’s Ross Killalea had the turn of foot on the day, putting in 16:13 for his 5k run and crossing the line just over 30 seconds ahead of National Triathlon Centre’s Sean McMahon. Cork’s Feidhlim O’Dubhlaing pulled ahead of Naas TC’s Fergus O’Toole on the run to take third spot on the podium.

Libby Carr was third overall out of the water, and her lead never looked in doubt running 17:40 for 5k to take home the women’s National Aquathlon Championship title. Behind Carr, Naoise O’Donnell, Laura Daly and Niamh Murphy were battling it out for the remaining spots on the podium. It was a Galway Triathlon Club silver and bronze for Naoise O’Donnell and Laura Daly. A busy day for the two Galway triathletes who continued on to contest Loughrea National Series in the afternoon, with Laura finishing second and Naoise seventh!
