Europe Triathlon has announced its season calendar for 2024. The Europe Triathlon Cup circuit, which will resume in March, will feature 13 events and an event in Ireland, with Cork hosting a sprint distance competition in July.
Cork will host both a European Cup and a Junior European Cup race in 2024. The Sprint distance races are scheduled to take place in Cork on the weekend of the 13th and 14th of July.
This is the first European Cup to be held in Ireland since 2009 while Dublin was host to last year’s Junior Cup race.
Indeed, Piranha Triathlon Club and Triathlon Ireland’s hosting of last summer’s Junior European Cup provided a number of up-and-coming young Irish athletes with the chance to race against some of the best of their European counterparts. A number of familiar names were in action, with Mathys Bocquet claiming the best Irish result of the day with 5th in the Men’s race, while Saoirse O’Brien took home 9th in the Women’s race.
One of the major bonuses for hosting an event such as this is the increased number of local athletes who will have had the chance to experience a race of this level for the first time. Triathlon Ireland was represented by ten athletes in the Junior Men’s event, and seven in the Women’s.
Prior to this, the last European Triathlon held in Ireland was the 2010 Athlone ETU Triathlon European Championships. The event saw Russell White don an Irish tri-suit for the first time; coming in 47th in a large field just 40 seconds ahead of Tokyo Olympic Gold medallist Kristian Blummenfelt.
