Ireland’s Lottie Cullen secured 50m and 100m Backstroke gold as well as a new Irish Record in the 100m at the BUCS Short Course Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield over the weekend.
A number of Irish swimmers, representing universities and colleges from Northern Ireland, as well as Scotland and England, competed across the weekend.
Cullen opened the weekend by breaking the 100m Backstroke record she had set at the Canada stop of the World Aquatics World Cup in October. The National Centre Ulster swimmer, representing the University of Ulster, dipped under the 57 second mark for the first time, clocking 56.96 to win gold in the event, her previous best had stood at 57.31.
On Sunday, Cullen claimed her second gold medal in the 50m Backstroke, touching in 26.61.
Thomas Leggett (Larne), representing Stirling University, was also a gold medallist at the event, clocking 21.94 to win 50m Freestyle Gold, he was the only swimmer under the 22 second mark. In the 100m Freestyle Final, Leggett was just .03 of a second outside the medals finishing fourth in 47.78.
There was also a silver medal for National Centre Ulster’s Rosalie Phelan who was competing for Queens University Belfast. Phelan, who will make her Ireland debut at the European SC Championships in December, clocked 25.02.
