Duathlon National Champions Decided in Phoenix Park

On Sunday, the 21st of April, nearly 300 athletes took to Phoenix Park to complete the final duathlon of the series, the Phoenix Park Duathlon Series 2, hosted by Belpark Triathlon Club. The Sprint distance race also played host to the National Duathlon Championships.

The first wave took off at 9:30 sharp, with wave 2 following soon after at 9:40 and wave 3 at 9:50. The athletes completed their first run of two laps, completing 5k in total. Conal Cremen, from Belpark Triathlon Club, was the first into T1, completing the 5k in 00:16:48. Peninsula Triathlon Club’s, James Graham was close behind with a run 1 time of 00:16:49.

Moving out of T1, the athletes took on the 21.3km bike leg, which consisted of 3 laps of a 7.1km loop. Conor Hennebry, from Tried and Tested completed the fastest bike course, with a time of 00:30:13.

Finally the athletes moved onto the final leg, run 2, a 2.5k loop, following the same course as run. Belpark’s, Cremen completed the fastest run 2, but Graham took the lead and was the first man home, with an overall time of 00:57:48.

Wicklow Triathlon Club’s Emma O’Brien dominated the Women’s race putting almost two minutes into her closest competitor in the opening 5k. Aoibh Clarke looked to claw back a few seconds on the bike, however, O’Brien further established her gap on the second run of the day for gold in a time of 1:02:00

Clarke crossed the line 2 minutes and 11 seconds behind O’Brien for silver, almost two minutes ahead of Deirdre Casey who crossed in 3rd to complete the podium.
