The Fields of Athenry 10k, hosted by Athenry AC, is back again this year with runners from Galway and beyond set to enjoy the brisk chilly weather and the undulating terrain of the 10km route on St Stephen’s Day. For many, the event is as much of a tradition as having turkey for Christmas dinner.
The race starts behind the train station and finishes under the historic arch in the heart of the town, the only surviving gate into what was once a walled town. There are four main left turns on the course, the first of which is shortly after the start. Your excitement at starting the race will soon be tested as there is quite a long drag almost as soon as you make that first left. There are a few more ups and downs along the way but it wouldn’t be considered a hilly course, with the last kilometre boasting a nice fast finish.
As always the race hat is a welcome bonus for all those participating, with the colour for this year a closely guarded secret. At the first Fields of Athenry 10K in 2002 it was a T-shirt, in 2004 it was a coffee mug but every other year, and this year will be no exception, every participant goes home with the now famous hat. It is always a fiercely guarded secret as to which colour in the rainbow will get the nod. You can see the history of the hat HERE.
Be warned, this race sells out fast and this year is no exception so don’t be disappointed by missing out, or why not gift an entry to your running buddy this Christmas?
Race entry is €29 and the event is expected to sell out soon, junior entries are available at €15 for 15-17-year-olds.
