Lara Gillespie secured the Gold medal in the Elimination race at the UCI Track World Championship, storming to an impressive podium finish. The reigning European Champion in the Scratch event increases her international medal tally, after holding her own in an impressive field.
With Belgium’s Hélène Hesters eliminated in the bronze medal position, this left Gillespie and Great Britain’s Archibald to battle it out in the final sprint. Archibald has currently won seven World Track Championship gold medals in her career across various events, seven silvers, and three bronze. She also boasts an impressive 20 European titles on the track, five silvers, and a bronze.
Entering the final lap, Archibald was the commentators favourite, although none were keen to fully dismiss Gillespie’s potential in the sprint. Gillespie managed her effort to come alongside Archibald as they rounded the final bend and take the win in convincing fashion with gap of fresh air between the riders.
