Three years ago Galway Bay Cycling Club became the first club in the country to promote a road race with gravel sectors when it ran the inaugural Galway Classic. The club has just launched another ‘ first ‘ for cycling with the ‘The Bog Trials’ taking place on the four Saturdays in February.
This event inspired by the Galway Classic is the first gravel race series in the country and takes place entirely on gravel and unpaved roads in the bogs of east Galway.
The races will feature a mixture of cross, mountain biking and road racing and will favour those with strength and good bike handling skills. The four races will be run as an open league on 4.5k circuits. Those that have previously completed the Galway Classic will be familiar with the tracks being used.
The events are open to all cyclists with an LC licence or higher and each race is limited to 30 riders with races starting at 11 am each week. The following races will be run;
- Mens A Race (experienced road/cross/mountain bikers and is open to gravel and cross bikes)
- Mens B Race (open to Cross, gravel and mountain bikes)
- Women’s Race (open to Cross, gravel and mountain bikes)
- Under 12/14/16 Races (open to Cross, gravel and mountain bikes)
