Going Wild for Ultra Cycling in Mayo in 2022

ByJoanne Murphy |

The Wild Mayo Ultra has today announced their dates for the 2022 event, a MayDay for ultra cyclists around the country to consider as they plan their season of racing ahead. Building on the success of the inaugural event held in July this year, the 2022 edition taking place on the 13th & 14th May is shaping up to be a big weekend of cycling with three different distances to choose from; 650km, 300km and 200k. It’s sure to gather a crowd as one of the first ultra-cycling events of 2022, hopefully the word ‘mayday’ won’t have to be used to bring the riders home!

Ultra-cycling has really taken off around the world in recent times, cyclists of all abilities are conquering all sorts of amazing feats of endurance, be that Everesting, cycling long distance point to point, multi day racing around a country or fulfilling a lifetime ambition of cycling around the circumference of the world. Exploration, adventure and fun are at the heart of ambition for success on two wheels in endurance cycling.

With three distances to choose from in next year’s event, there is something for everyone who has an interest in going long on the bike.  The 200km route is achievable for many cyclists who enjoy a regular Sunday spin or long distance ride and are looking to challenge themselves and have a goal to ensure consistent training over the winter.

The 300km route will most definitely test riders and will require a more committed and consistent approach to training over the early months of 2022.  Achievable for most with the right training and preparation it is a definite choice of event for those who wish to whet their appetite for ultra-cycling. The 200 and 300k events can be taken on with a buddy, a partner or a friend as a relay; this option will suit those who may feel that a full ultra is a bit beyond them just yet.

The 650km route is a monster and is not for the faint hearted.  The hills and scenery will surely take your breath away but the pride and achievement of completing the race far outweighs the grit, determination and focus required to even get to the start line of the event.  With the right mind-set, training, a strong will to go long and by pushing your body and mind to the limit, finishing an event like the Wild Mayo Ultra 650k can be achieved.  It won’t be easy but then achieving great things takes time, commitment and dedication. This distance is open to Solo, 2, 4,6 and 8 person teams.

Speaking about the events for 2022, Padraig Marrey said ‘Ultra cycling allows participants to go deep, go further, go harder and challenge themselves whilst having the safety net of a backup crew and vehicle to support them. In 2022 we are offering three routes of the Wild Mayo Ultra, to cater for the growing demand from cyclists to go long, to push themselves and to see how far they can go. Completing an Ultra event is one of the most personal and satisfying experiences, be it as a solo rider or on a team. By using the routes from the Wild Mayo Ultra we promise it will push the body and mind to the limit but will satisfy the soul! The beautiful scenery will help to take your mind off the difficulty encountered on the challenge.”

Westport will once again play host to the Wild Mayo Ultra event as the starting and finishing point of the race.  The adventure capital of Ireland, it’s an ideal location for an event like this, the bustling busy town has all the ingredients to nurture the body and soul of an ultra-endurance athlete.

There are plans for training events to take place over the coming months to support riders who sign up to the event or who wish to sign up encouraging people to explore the world of endurance cycling. To find out more and sign up to the Wild Mayo Ultra click on the link HERE
