Jonathan Oakey was one of several Irish athletes in action this weekend in the U23 World Championships. Finishing in 18th position with a strong swim and bike, Oakey reflected on his race stating he was “really happy… and really pleased”, having been quietly aiming for a top 20 result.

Erin McConnell was also in action in the women’s U23 World Championships in a strong field. A strong swim and powerful bike saw her in a great position entering into T2, however she struggled with a stitch on the run seeing her drop a number of places.

World Paratriathlon Championship

Chloe Maccombe and her guide Catherine Sands were 5th in the Women’s PTVI classification to finish off a successful season. The pair will now take some down time before focusing on a number of races next year to secure their spot at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. While they are currently in a qualifying position, they will need to continue to race to maximise their points and keep their position secure.

Meanwhile, in the Men’s PTVI, Donnacha McCarthy and his guide Sean Husband finished in 10th position, with McCarthy stating the pair were “a little disappointed with the result.” With a bout of illness earlier in the week, the pair will seek to refocus for their final two races of the season and hope to finish on a high.
