Luke McCarron was back in green this weekend representing Triathlon Ireland at the 2024 Europe Triathlon Cup Rzeszów, Poland.
McCarron finished the race in 47th position overall, in his first international race of the 2024 season. Speaking after the race, he said, “I felt like I never really got firing today. The swim was alright but I just didn’t have the power to be towards the front of the bike pack and therefore it wasn’t long before I was dropped.
“No excuses for it but hopefully I can go away and learn from today.”
World Triathlon Para Cup, Taranto
Meanwhile, at the 2024 World Triathlon Para Cup Taranto in Italy, both Tom Williamson and Donnacha McCarthy, and guide Sean Husband, took home some silverware as they continue their quests for their respective Paris Paralympic qualification slots.
Having led out of the water and off the bike, Williamson crossed the line in third in the Men’s PTS5 race, narrowly out-run for silver by Australia’s David Bryant.
In the Men’s PTVI race, McCarthy and Husband were agonisingly close to the top step of the podium and securing higher points to aid in their Paralympic Games qualification ambitions. The result moves the duo back up to 12th in Paris Paralympic rankings, with the chance to secure more points again at their next race later this month.
Oliver Gunning was also in action in the Men’s PTVI, finishing 8th overall in his first outing of 2024.
Williamson will now turn his attention to the 2024 World Triathlon Para Cup Besancon, France, next weekend, where he will be joined by both Chloe and Judith MacCombe and their guides.
McCarthy and Husband will switch focus to the 2024 World Triathlon Para Series Swansea, Wales, where they will be joined by several other Irish Para Triathletes.
