Irish International Triathlon Weekend Round Up

Triathlon Ireland had athletes competing in Hamburg, Swansea, and Long Beach, in several different race categories this weekend.

Hamburg was host to the 2023 World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships Hamburg. Triathlon Ireland was represented by Erin McConnell, Ralf Bodamer, Saoirse O’Brien, and Jonathan Oakey, in the U23 Elite Mixed Relay Championship. The team finished 16th overall gaining valuable experience for the young athletes as they develop in their career.

Individually, Mathys Bocquet was in action representing Ireland in the World Junior Sprint Championships. Mathys’ progress in the race was unfortunately stalled due to a crash out on the bike course. Bocquet finished 66th overall, serving a 10-second penalty on the run section.

Meanwhile, in the age-group races, Ireland was well-represented across age groups, with Vanessa Fenton (5th), Michael Laws (9th), and Patrick Tierney (4th) all finishing within the top ten of their respective categories. Michael Mallon was in action in the 75-79 age group as Ireland’s oldest athlete competing at the championships.

Across the Atlantic, Luke McCarron finished 44th in the Elite Men’s race at the 2023 Americas Triathlon Cup Long Beach.

In the Para-Triathlon world, both Chloe MacCombe and her guide Catherine Sands finished 6th in the World Triathlon Para Series Swansea, PTVI Women, while Donnacha McCarthy and his guide Sean Husband were 3rd at the 2023 World Triathlon Para Cup Long Beach, PTVI Men after their recent 7th in the World Triathlon Para Series Montreal, PTVI Men, last weekend. Oliver Gunning was also in action, taking 9th at the 2023 World Triathlon Para Cup Long Beach, PTVI Men.
