Joe Barr’s Wild Atlantic Way Record Attempt

ByJoanne Murphy |

Joe Barr a name synonymous with ultra endurance cycling, racing and record breaking is on a mission to set a new Guinness and World Ultra-Cycling Association World Record as he takes on his latest racing adventure on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way starting today 11th May.

With International travel and World Cup racing taking a back seat due to COVID to date in 2021 Joe set up his own racing challenge to cycle from Muff in Co. Donegal to Kinsale in Co.Cork, taking a North South route battling the prevailing winds as part of this epic challenge.

In total Joe will cycle the 2,343 kilometres and 23,231 meters of climbing non stop. A journey that intimately hugs the West Coast of Ireland and all its glorious sights, sounds and strong winds that make this challenge even more exceptional that it reads on paper. Having previously set records the length and breadth of the country this challenge brings him to new roads, challenges and horizons.

Speaking about this latest adventure Joe said ”This race will be part duel and part dance between Ireland and my physical, mental and emotional capacity. Who creates the rhythm? Well that’s the fine art of being in the heart of the race. Sometimes you beat the drum and sometimes you have to dance to the beat.I’m drawn to the edges, the places I have yet to visit inside myself and after all this time there is still more to discover. “

Joe is not only taking on this challenge and journey as a personal discovery, he is supporting

a 2 year old boy from Belfast, Zion Cassidy, who was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma just before Christmas. His little body is not coping well with treatment and his parents are desperately trying to raise money for Zion to access advanced cancer trials which will give hime the best chance at beating cancer for good! You can show your support for Joe by donating on the link HERE helping Joe to make history whilst creating a future for Zion.
