James Edgar continued his impressive run of success by clinching the silver medal at the Americas Triathlon Cup held in La Paz, Mexico, over the weekend.
An impressive start with a strong swim allowed Edgar to emerge in third place after the 1500m swim; the absence of wetsuits facilitating swift transitions onto the 38km bike course for all participants. The lead pack maintained an impressive pace of around 40kph throughout the single-lap bike course before tackling the four-lap run course.
Despite a dominant performance from Mexico’s Peñaflor Moysen for gold, Edgar put up a fierce fight to secure the silver medal, narrowly fending off Ukraine’s Vorontsov at the finish line. Another significant result in the ongoing battle for Olympic qualification, particularly as Felix Duchampt, the current European New Flag holder, finished in 5th place, three positions behind Edgar.
Looking ahead, Edgar will shift his focus to the 2024 Europe Triathlon Cup in Quarteira next week, where he will enter the competition ranked 79th in the World Triathlon Rankings. Meanwhile, Duchampt maintains his position as the flagbearer for Europe, currently ranked 49th, while Azerbaijan’s Pevtsov drops to 61st place.
In the women’s competition, Elizabeth Carr continues to make substantial progress on the global stage. Securing a 5th place finish, Carr showcased her formidable running prowess as she engaged in a tight battle with Mexico’s Torres Gomez, narrowly missing out on 4th position. Both athletes pushed themselves to the limit, with Japan’s Fukuoka just ahead in 3rd place. Meanwhile, the host nation’s Rosa Maria Tapia Vidal, currently ranked 10th in the World Triathlon Ranking, asserted her dominance with a commanding victory in the women’s race.
Carr’s performance catapults her up the World Triathlon Rankings by an impressive 40 places, now standing at 148th as she prepares for the Africa Triathlon Premium Cup in Nelson Mandela Bay on April 7th.
Also in action next week in Quarteira’s European Triathlon Junior Cup are Ethan Doherty, Mathys Bocquet and Sean McMahon. Russell White will also get his international season underway next weekend at the World Triathlon Cup Hong Kong.
