Limerick Duathlon Race Report

ByEmma Porter |

Over 150 people gathered from around the country to the University of Limerick for the second duathlon of the season. Hosted by Limerick Triathlon Club, on Sunday 18th of February. The event kicked off at 9.30am, and the sense of excitement and determination lingered straight through to the finish line, where we witnessed great team spirit between clubs, celebrating their members as well as support from friends and family.

The 4.6km run kicked off with a mass start, trailing around the grounds of the university & along the challenging banks of the Shannon and towards the UL boathouse. Joe O’Connor from Tralee Tri Club held the fastest time during the first run, followed by Eoin Bailey, our overall winner.

Sprinting into Transition 1, Cole Phelan smoothly changed over to the bike and set off on the 19km route. The route was fast and flat around the outskirts of Limerick City. Two members of Tullamore Tri Club, Dean & Cole Phelan completed the bike route in the shortest length of time.

After some smooth dismounts, the participants transitioned back to the 4km run, which looped back towards the river following the route of the first leg. The athletes pushed towards the finish line, where eager supporters awaited, cheering on and clapping as they crossed the line. Eoin Bailey was the first male to sprint to the finish, having kept top ranking throughout. Shona Keane was the first female to finish strong, met with cheering supporters.

The exciting atmosphere stayed right through to the end, with plenty of cheer & support for every person as they arrived home. A fantastic race where participants celebrated their achievements and proudly represented their clubs.
