The 2025 edition of Rás Mumhan opened with a two-stage day on Friday 18th of April.
Riders first tackled an 8.6km Team Time Trial into the Kerry town of Castleisland. The Composite Black team, having travelled over from the UK, took stage honours in the opener, with a time of 10’33”2. Spellman Dublin Port took second, exactly six seconds down on the winners, followed by Team Caldwell Cycles plus seven seconds.
Stage 1B saw riders take on 67.6km, leaving Castleisland, before doing five loops of a circuit just south of Knocknagashel, finishing up the hill into the village. The rain that hammered riders for the TTT had mostly cleared by the afternoon’s stage, but conditions remained damp. The pace was high from the start, with the peleton splitting into three groups just prior to entering the circuit. A crash in the leading group on the second last lap put a dent in some rider’s day. Matteo Cigala of Dan Morrissey Pissei took the uphill sprint finish, ahead of Velo Performance’s Willem O’Connor and Connacht’s Niall McLoughlin in second and third respectively.
Stage 2 on Saturday saw more inclement weather, as the race set off from Killarney for a 116km stage to Portmagee, featuring a massive 1378 metres of climbing. The amount of climbing throughout the stage saw several splits in the field. Casper Rode riding with West-Frisia took the win on the day ahead of Burren CC’s Daire Feeley and Composite Black’s Jamie Whitcher.
Stage 3 was another big opportunity for the climbers, with 1537 vertical metres across the 120km route. Starting out from Millstreet, riders were sent out to Macroom, before doing two loops of a circuit, and heading back in towards Millstreet, and finishing on the iconic Kerryman’s Table finish. Tom Martin, riding this weekend with Spellman Dublin Port powered his way up the climbs to take the win and rode himself into second on the General Classification behind Composite Black’s Whitcher. Velo Performance rider Willem O’Connor continued his strong weekend with a second place on the stage, followed by Spirit Racing Team’s George Kimber in third.
Easter Monday and Stage 4 saw riders leave Killorglin for the 113km final stage, finishing back in Killorglin with 10 laps of the town circuit. Tom Martin came into the day chasing GC leader Jamie Whitcher, with Whitcher’s lead at 25 seconds. Martin put in a hard-nosed performance to take not only the win on stage four, but also the overall GC win, leapfrogging Whitcher. Spirit Racing’s George Kimber took second on the day ahead of Connacht’s Niall McLoughlin.
The final GC standings saw Tom Martin on the top step, with Jamie Whitcher in second and young Velo Performance rider Willem O’Connor taking third overall.
His performances on the tough climbing stages also saw Tom Martin take home the polka dot King of the Mountains jersey, as well as the Points jersey.
Jamie Whitcher saw his strong showing across the four days bear fruit as he took home the Young Rider Classification.
Team Caldwell Cycles’ consistency across the weekend brought them the overall Team General Classification title, ahead of Foran CT in second, and Spellman Dublin Port in third.
