McCarron in Top 10 at Supertri E World Triathlon Championships

ByEmma Porter |

James Edgar and Luke McCarron were in action for Ireland in London over the weekend at the Supertri E World Triathlon Championships.

Format

The event consisted of both Heats and Finals on a single day. Athletes needed to qualify for the Final in the evening via Heats in the morning. With a total of 3 Heats, each Heat consisted of 2 Stages (Swim – Bike – Run / Swim – Bike – Run) and 10 athletes. The race is held in a continuous fashion, differing from previous years. The top 2 athletes from each heat plus the fastest 4 athletes overall progressed to the Final.

The Final consisted of 3 Stages without a break (Swim – Bike – Run // Swim – Bike – Run // Swim – Bike – Run). Again the final was continuous, with no break between stages as there was in previous years.

Course

The swim took place over 200m in the 50m pool, with each athlete having their own lane. After the final length, participants needed to get out of the pool and make their way to the bike station.

The bike  was static on Tacx Neo3M Trainers linked to the virtual world of MyWhoosh. Athletes completed 2 laps for a total distance of 4km.

The run took place via self powered curved treadmills linked to the virtual world of MyWhoosh. Athletes completed a total distance of 1km on the Run.

Results

Luke McCarron produced a fantastic result of 9th overall against stiff competition in the Final round of the championships. Finishing the 3 stages in just 38 minutes and 42 seconds, he rubbed shoulders with some of World Triathlon’s best with both 2023 World Champion Dorian Coninx and double Olympic medallist Jonathan Brownlee finishing just ahead for 4th and 5th position.

Having recently reached his first International podium, McCarron made the Final after a week of working the night shift in the lead up to the race. Taking to instagram he said, “9th at @supertri_ E Indoor World Championships.

The goal was to make the final and I was delighted to be able to do that. It’s good progress from a 19th finish two years ago but of course there’s work still to be done.

A brilliant day in the Olympic Park racing athletes that I grew up watching; meeting some cool people from the triathlon world and being cheered by my own SuperFan Club – I owe you guys.”

The race was won by France’s Maxime Hueber-Moosbrugger in a time of 36:43 to secure the 2025 Supertri E World Triathlon Championship title, with Chase McQueen of the USA in 2nd place and Poland’s Maciej Bruzdziak rounding out the podium.

James Edgar finished 6th in Heat 1 of the Elite Men’s race in a time of 25:44, which was unfortunately not enough to progress to the Final round.

Niall Cornyn is the next athlete in action for Ireland as he prepares to take on the 2025 World Triathlon Powerman Middle Distance Duathlon Championships Alsdorf on the 27th of April.
