McCarthy Medals in Multi-Sport Championships in Samorin

ByEmma Porter |

Donnacha McCarthy, and guide Sean Husband, followed up their European Middle Distance Duathlon Champs title won earlier in the year, with Aquathlon World Championships in Samorin.

The 1K swim took place in the Danube followed by a 5K run in 35°C heat. The para-race got underway after the Elite race, with Donnacha and Sean exiting the water in second place before taking the lead in transition.

“After doing a recci of the course the day before we knew the first and final 500m or so were going to be challenging and Sean had his work cut out for him to guide me through the technical turns and changes in ground surface but his communication was on the ball as always, it was no time before we crossed the line to take the tape,” Donnacha told us.

“As this race didn’t count towards Paralympic qualification we could enjoy this one a little more and overall it was a great experience, however its a pity more para-athletes don’t take part in events like this as its a great intro to International racing and helps to raise the profile of the sport as well as creating awareness.

The focus is now very much on Paris qualification once again and accumulating world ranking points until the end of the year! We would like to thank Triathlon Ireland and Sport Ireland for their support as well as our sponsors Kingspan, Big Red Cloud and Sandymount Nuromuscular for their continued support towards Paralympic qualification.”
