McSharry Eases into Another Olympic Breaststroke Semi-Final

ByEmma Porter |

Just 36 hours after winning Ireland’s first medal of the Paris Games, 100m Breaststroke bronze medallist Mona McSharry is through to another semi-final in the 200m Breaststroke.

McSharry, who qualified the event in June with a new Irish Record of 2:22.49, swam her third fastest time ever in the event clocking 2:23.78, for third place in her heat, the Sligowoman progressing seventh overall.

Speaking after the race McSharry said, That’s the third fastest I’ve ever swam and the second fastest ‘morning’ swim so I’m very happy with that after the last 48 hours. It’s been a good re-focus and I should be back tonight and I’m just trying to go faster again. I felt strong so that’s good.”

Honestly the mind is probably more tired than the body. It’s just been a lot. Yesterday was just a chill day for me and I was trying my best just not to expend too much energy mentally. This morning, I was just a bit quiet, but I think I’m always a bit like that going into a 200m, but it was a good race so hopefully that’ll bring more energy tonight .I went to bed around 4:40, five o’clock (Tuesday morning) but  I slept in until 10: 30 (laughs), I got a good six hours of sleep. It just took a while for my mind to calm down, but it was good.”

The 200m Breaststroke Semi-Final takes place on Wednesday at 9.02pm with the top eight progressing to Thursday’s Final.
