ByEmma Porter |

The medal rush continued for Irish Para swimming in Madeira as Róisín Ní Riain stormed to victory to claim her second European gold medal of the 2024 European Para Swimming Championships.

The reigning World champion continued her dominance in the 100 Backstroke S13 event, claiming top spot on the podium last night in Madeira. The Limerick woman fought off competition from current European record holder Carlotta Gilli of Italy on her way to gold in a time of 1:06.96, finishing 1.87 seconds ahead of the Italian.

Speaking following her gold standard performance, Ní Riain said, “That was a pretty good swim, definitely some mistakes were made there but this is the kind of competition we come to that we get to learn from. There’s some cleaning up to do but hopefully that will come.”

The National Centre (Limerick) swimmer’s medal tally for the week now stands at three (two gold, one silver) with three events to come, the first being the 400 Freestyle Heat taking place today.

Earlier in the day, Ellen Keane narrowly missed out on a spot in the 100 Freestyle S9 Final, placing 9th overall in the heats with a time of 1:07.72. Keane will be back on the blocks this Saturday to compete in the 100 Breaststroke, her main event.
