Both Kate O’Connor (Dundalk St. Gerald’s A.C.) and Nick Griggs (Candour Track Club) have been confirmed as additions to the Irish team for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

The duo will both compete at their first senior World Championships.

O’Connor has been added to the Heptathlon field. The Irish record holder and Commonwealth Games silver medallist in the event has impressed this season with a best of 6125 points achieved in Germany in June.

18-year-old Griggs will join Andrew Coscoran and Luke McCann in the Men’s 1500m. The Tyrone man has been in phenomenal form in 2023, setting Irish U20 records over the 1500m, Mile, 3000m, and 5000m.

Griggs will be in action at next week’s European U20 Championships in Jerusalem over 3000m as he bids to retain the title he won in 2021.

Thomas Barr (Ferrybank A.C.) has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Budapest due to an injury incurred in training this week.

The 31-year-old from Waterford had been due to compete in the 400m Hurdles at the championships which commence in two weeks’ time in Hungary.

There are now 24 athletes confirmed in the Irish squad, the largest ever selected for these championships.

The action gets underway in Hungary on August 19th, concluding on August 27th.
