Olatunde and Bergin Sprint to 100M Golds as Kelly Smashes 400M Championships Record

Israel Olatunde (Tallaght AC) and Katie Bergin (Moyne AC) lived up to their favourites tags with victory in today’s 100m finals (U23) at the 123.ie U20 and U23 National Championships in Tullamore (Aug 3rd).

Olatunde, who claimed his fourth straight senior title back in June, secured today’s U23 title with a time of 10.35 (+0.4) in the final having clocked 10.42 (+3.8) in the earlier round.

Katie Bergin won a dramatic women’s U23 100m gold, dipping at the line to clock 11.93 ahead of Longford’s Adeyemi Talabi in 11.95.  Bergin would also return to the blocks to secure the 200m title in 24.54, with Adnrew Egan (Galway City Harriers) taking the U23 mens 100m in 21.67.

The U20 men’s and women’s 400m were billed as races not to be missed with selection on the World U20 mixed 4 x 400m relay team on the horizon. They didn’t disappoint with Conor Kelly (Derry Track Club) smashing David McCarthy’s 2001 championship record of 48.36 to cross in a winning time of 47.62 in the men’s race, while Niamh Murray (Bray Runners AC) was a clear winner of the U20 women’s 400m, crossing in a winning time of 55.94.

Joe Burke (200m) continued his sparling form to claim the U20 200m title (21.60), with the women’s 200m going to rising star AKPE-MOSES, Precious Akpe Moses (Blackrock AC Louth) in 24.44

Among the others to impress on the day included European U18 hammer champion Thomas Williams who won gold with a best throw of 62.20m, while fellow European throws medallist Cian Crampton (Endederry) also claimed his receptive U20 title in the discus with 51.77m.

Recent European U18 silver medallist Seamus Clarke (5000mW) walked his way to gold in the 5000m in 21:30.15, while Oisin Joyce (Lake District AC) impressed once again to throw a winning javelin of 70.56CR to break his own championship record.
