O’Neill Takes Top Honours at Coombes Connor

Drogheda Wheelers hosted the Coombes Connor Memorial race yesterday, the fourth National Single Grade race of 2026.

Winner of last year’s final National Grade race Gareth O’Neill, riding for Athlete Nutrition Coach Nordic Labs, took the win in the C1 Category. Caldwell Powerhouse Racing’s Lindsay Watson took second, while Bear Cycling, and Louth local Bryan McCrystal took third. McCrystal’s son, Rian, also rode the C1 race, with the Junior taking 12th in the colours of Cannibal B Victorious.

The C1 race was won by Cathir Doyle from Carn Wheelers, ahead of Lucan CRC’s Gavin Hendley and Emyvale’s Declan McEntee in second and third respectively.

Kilcullen CC Murphy Geospatial rider Gavin Stapleton bagged the win in the C3 race, with clubmate Colm Bracken taking third, the pair separated only by Eoin Rheinisch of Bear Cycling in second.

First year junior Emer Heverin, this year riding for Camsmajaco, was the highest female finisher, taking 14th overall in the C3 race. Orwell club mates Gráinne O’Callaghan and Claire Diffley were second and third highest female finishers respectively.

The National Single Grade calendar keeps moving forward, with the Des Hanlon Memorial taking place in Carlow this Sunday, 29th of March. The event will feature C1, 2 and 3 races and a separate Women’s race. Entries are can be found HERE.
