Seven Irish Para swimmers delivered strong performances at the 2025 International German Championships (IDM Berlin), held from June 19th to 22nd at the Schwimm- und Sprunghalle in the Europasportpark (SSE), Berlin. The competition, one of the top events on the international Para swimming calendar, welcomed athletes from around the world and returned this year to its traditional format as an open international championship, sanctioned by World Para Swimming (WPS).
Double Paralympic medallist Róisín Ní Ríain delivered a standout performance over the four days winning an impressive seven medals across a demanding schedule. She secured five golds in the 50m Backstroke, 100m Butterfly, 100m Backstroke, 200m Backstroke, and 200m Individual Medley, demonstrating both speed and versatility across strokes and distances. Rounding out her medal haul, Ní Ríain also earned bronze in the 400m and 800m Freestyle events, showing remarkable consistency throughout the meet.
Luke O’Donoghue delivered a strong all-round performance at IDM Berlin, competing in six events and reaching multiple finals. He took gold in the Youth Final of the 100m Backstroke, narrowly improving his time from the heats, and added a bronze medal in the 400m Freestyle Youth Final. He also made finals in the 100m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly, showing consistent time drops, and completed his schedule with solid swims in the 200m Individual Medley and 100m Freestyle.
Luke Brennan took on a varied programme at IDM Berlin, showing strong improvements across his races. He claimed silver in the Youth Final of the 100m Backstroke, where he dropped time from his heat and went head-to-head with teammate Luke O’Donoghue, who took gold. Brennan also advanced to finals in both the 50m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly, continuing to lower his times. He added further race experience in the 100m Breaststroke and 100m Freestyle, rounding out a well-balanced and encouraging weekend of competition.
Deaten Registe had a busy programme in Berlin, featuring in four events and making finals in both the 50m and 100m Breaststroke. He showed strong form in the 100m, dipping under 1:09 in the final, and also competed in the 100m Freestyle and 200m Individual Medley, further building on his international race experience and testing himself across a range of events.
Barry McClements delivered a strong showing at IDM Berlin, progressing to finals in four events across freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly.
Derry native, Dearbhaile Brady progressed to the final of the 100m Breaststroke, recording 1:48.39 in the heats and 1:48.93 in the final.
Síomha Nic Brádaigh competed in the 100m and 200m Freestyle at IDM Berlin, recording times of 1:24.71 and 2:57.44 respectively in the heats.
