Para Triathlete Success in Taranto

ByEmma Porter |

Tom Williamson, Judith MacCombe and Eimear Nicholls, and Donnacha McCarthy and Sean Husband faced world-class fields in their respective categories at the 2025 World Triathlon Para Series Taranto, Italy.

Silver for Williamson

Tom Williamson (PTS5) continued his season with a strong performance in Taranto last weekend, claiming a silver medal to mark his first podium finish at this level.

Williamson set a strong pace in the swim, leading the field out of the water. Williamson continued with a consistent performance through the bike leg, producing the fastest split of the field. Paris 2024 Paralympian Jack Howell (AUS), secured first place overall, with Tom only narrowly missing out on the top spot by 25 seconds. The podium was completed by Portugal’s Felipe Marques in third.

Reflecting on the performance, Williamson said, “My first series podium! I am absolutely stoked with the result. It was a tough day out there, but there’s still plenty of room for growth — I’m excited for what’s to come.”

Bronze for MacCombe & Nicholls

Judith MacCombe (PTVI) opened her season alongside guide Eimear Nicholls, earning a bronze medal in Taranto. The duo lined up against a world-class field that included two-time Paralympic champion Susana Rodriguez (ESP), Italian contender Francesca Tarantello and Anja Renner – all Paris 2024 medallists whom MacCombe & Nicholls faced at the Paralympic Games last season.

The pair produced a strong all-around performance which put them in medal contention and recorded the second fastest bike leg of the race to bring home a bronze medal.

Judith shared her thoughts on her season opener, saying it was a “A solid day out against the best in the world – and in the heat! Some lessons learnt and some things to improve on, but overall pleased with today’s result! Looking forward to European Championships next weekend.“

McCarthy & Husband’s International Season Debut

Donnacha McCarthy and Sean Husband (PTVI) finished in 9th place in the Men’s PTVI category at their 2025 international season debut. The pair produced a solid performance across the race in preparation for next week’s European Championships in Besançon, France.
