Preview: Draft Legal & Sprint Champs at Two Provinces Triathlon

ByEmma Porter |

On the domestic scene, it’s a big weekend ahead with Lanesboro Triathlon Club’s Two Provinces Triathlon hosting this year’s Draft Legal and Age Group Sprint Distance National Championships.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page for the start lists but first here’s all you need to know about the National Champs.

Who can take part?

The draft-legal Sprint Distance National Championships will be run alongside the main race at Two Provinces but don’t forget – they are separate events with separate titles up for grabs!

Age Group sprint distance national Champs & Triathlon National Series

The Age Group Sprint Distance National Champs & Triathlon National Series race at Two Provinces is the main mass participation race.

The overall male and female winners of the “Age Group Sprint Distance National Champs & Triathlon National Series” race will win the Sprint Distance National Championship for their Age Group, and secure points in the Triathlon National Series race.

And don’t forget this year’s Two Provinces is also a qualification race for Tri Team Ireland racing in 2026.

Draft Legal National Championships

The Draft-Legal Sprint Distance National Championships sees athletes race across the draft-legal format, the only chance to do so in Ireland this year.

The 2025 Sprint Distance National Champions will be the winners of the draft legal race. There will not be any age group prizes awarded from the draft legal race.

Juniors and seniors will start and race together and there is nothing stopping a junior athlete from winning the race outright, in which case he or she will take home the overall title, and the title of Junior National Champion

Junior National Championship

Athletes from the age of 16 – 19 can enter to compete for the Junior National Championship. Junior athletes will start with the draft-legal Sprint Distance National Championship men’s and women’s waves!

Who’s in for the draft-legal?

Always thrilling to watch, this year’s draft legal fields promise to deliver outstanding racing across the Lanesboro course. The lake swim followed by a flat 20km out and back bike course, before the 5km run always provides some fast times. This course has a history of draft-legal racing, having been a regular on the Super Series scene throughout the 2010’s.

What’s happening in this weekend’s National Series?

It’s all to play for in two stacked fields for those looking to earn vital Triathlon National Series points, as well as an Age Group National Championship title. Plenty of this year’s contenders are on the start lists, it’s going to make for an all important Triathlon National Series round.

In the women’s race, 2024 series winner Becky Woods and runner up Aisling Wyer will go head to head for the first time since Tri Athy earlier in the series. Megan Roberts and Hannah Roche have both been on form this year and making their presence felt. Crosshaven’s Meadhbh Moynihan is always a contender and will be vying for her first podium of the series. Newly crowned Aquabike National Champion Vanessa Fenton and podium finisher Mary O’Donnell will be in Longford, as will Belpark’s Ellen Murphy. Fresh from her Age Group win at the World Triathlon Long Distance Championships, Naoise O’Donnell is also on the start line.

In the men’s race, things are looking equally as competitive with plenty of this year’s podium finishers in attendance. Having been separated by just four seconds at last week’s Harbourman Triathlon, Scott Graham and Ciaran Kyne will have the chance to race again. James Hoare put in one of the fastest runs across standard distance last week, something that will stand to the Naas TC athlete across sprint distance. Shane Dunne and Donal Mongey have been having strong seasons so far, and have been in the mix consistently. Regular top ten finishers Galway TC’s Ruadhri Geraghty and Ernest Asensio Blasco are also due to start in Longford.

Race for Tri Team Ireland – Qualify for Tri Team Ireland – Pontevedra 2026

Both events serve as qualifiers for Team Ireland international racing in 2026, where the World Triathlon Sprint Championships will take place in Pontevedra, Spain – a stunning and world-class triathlon destination.

Whether you’re chasing titles, points, or international dreams, Two Provinces 2025 is going to have it all.
