Round 13 of the Triathlon National Series brought athletes to the city for the highly anticipated Dublin City Triathlon, hosted by Piranha Triathlon Club. Competitors took to the start line to tackle the swim in the River Liffey, followed by a technical bike and run through the grounds of Phoenix Park. Athletes chose between the Sprint, Aquabike, Try-aTri and the National Series Standard race, while the Mixed Team Relay race saw corporate teams go head-to-head in a battle of speed and teamwork.
Shane Dunne put in an impressive performance to claim his first National Series win of the season, after two podium finishes in third place at TriAthy and Tribesman Triathlon. Shane led the men’s race out of the water, setting the tone with a fast 00:19:27 swim, and continued with a strong bike and run to seal the victory.
Sean McCullagh finished just under a minute behind in 2:07:45 to claim second place. McCullagh pushed through a fast run leg of 00:38:44 as he chased down Dunne to secure his second podium finish of the National Series this season. The final podium spot went to Eoin Nagle, who produced the fastest run of the top three, in 37 minutes and 45 seconds to secure third place, marking Eoin’s first podium of the season.
Saoirse O’Brien returned to the National Series podium after winning Skerries Triathlon and claiming second place at the Irish National Sprint Championships earlier this summer. After exiting the swim in a strong second place overall, O’Brien continued with a consistent performance on the bike and run to secure the top spot.
Current runner-up of this year’s National Series, Becky Woods, claimed second place in 2:13:18. Woods put in a determined performance chasing down O’Brien throughout the race, showing great strength with the quickest run of the women’s field. The final podium spot went to Naoise O’Donnell, who crossed the line in 2:29:20, putting together a solid swim and run combination to round out the top three.
