The SERE Lisburn Duathlon took place at Down Royal Racecourse on Sunday 1st March in breezy and overcast conditions, with temperatures sitting at a cool but comfortable 8°C.
Athletes gathered for registration, and after preparing bikes in transition, met for a short racing briefing in the Racecourse Grandstand. Following a quick warm-up, athletes were ready for a 10am sharp start. Lining up at the entrance road of the race course saw a mass start with competitors from across the island of Ireland set off on the opening 3K run around the racecourse perimeter.
The flat tarmac route allowed for fast early pacing, with Open Category front runner James Graham setting the pace early on. Runners quickly settled into position, traversing the picturesque racecourse, before heading into T1 at the back of the Grandstand.
The 16.2K bike leg followed, taking athletes onto undulating public roads. Road conditions required focus in places, but riders navigated the course well under non-drafting rules with marshals ensuring safety throughout. Helen Perry powered the bike section of the course with a stand-out bike split.
Along the final bike stretch, spectators cheered on ‘Brain Injury Matters’ competitors, who all completed the course successfully.
Coming back along the main entrance into transition, athletes smoothly completed T2 before heading out on the final 3K run. With legs tested from a windy bike course, the closing run produced some strong finishes and determined efforts through to the finishing line.
