A team of 40 athletes represented Ireland at the SIAB Schools Cross Country International Competition which to place at the Sport Ireland Campus over the weekend.
Huge crowds were treated to a host of outstanding performances from the Irish teams across the busy three-hour schedule.
The Renton twins got Ireland off to a flyer in the first race of the day with Freya (1st) and Holly (3rd) aiding an outstanding team performance which saw Ireland secure team silver in the junior girls race.
The junior boys put in strong showing to finish 4th in the team standings, while the intermediate girls provided one of the outstanding collective performances of the day with six athletes finishing inside the top 20 which secured Ireland the team silver. Emily Bolton led the team home in 8th, followed in by scorers Emily Morris 12th, Clara Casey 13th, Dearbhla Allen 14th, Eimear Cooney 18th, and Ava Diver 20th. Cora Scullion 26th and Sholah Lawrence 29th were outside the scoring places but did well to hold off challengers from Scotland and Wales at the finish.
The intermediate boys team followed up with a medal of their own shortly after with an outstanding effort to claim team claim silver thanks to superb packing throughout. Daire Matthews was first of the Irish home in 7th, soon followed across by scorers Odhran McBrearty 9th, Leo Murray 11th, Lorcan Forde Dunne 13th, Harry McKenzie 15th, and Declan O’Connell 18th. Teammates Rhys Johnson 20th and James Foot 22nd also played their part in holding off rival placed finishers.
