Seven members of the para athletics squad were in action at the Athletics Ireland National Indoor Championships this weekend, with many producing personal best performances over the two day event.

Day 1 featured Aaron Shorten, Cathal Ryan and Alex Lee on the track.

Cathal Ryan posted a time of 51.92 in his 400m heat which was the first of seven on the day. This time did not see him through to the semi-final stage with only the first two and 4 fastest after that advancing.

In another packed field Alex Lee placed 4th in his 200m heat with a time of 24.77. The six fastest out of the 7 heats advanced to the final. Robert Mc Donnell of Galway City Harriers took the title in a time of 21.05.

Aaron Shorten ran his 1500m heat in 4:10.71. The top four from the three heats advanced to the final which culminated in Nick Griggs and Cathal Doyle falling over the finishing line in tandem, Doyle taking first place by mere fractions of a second.

Day 2 was ladies day with Paralympians Orla Comerford and Mary Fitzgerald in action along with newcomer Lana Sutton.

Lana Sutton was competing in two events the 60m Sprint and the Long Jump. She finished 6th in her 60m heat in a time of 8.36. Her best attempt in the long jump was 4.24.

Mary Fitzgerald threw a season’s best distance of 8:03 in the Women’s Shot Put, hitting the Paris high performance standard for a second time in a few weeks.

Comerford came third in her 60m sprint heat with strong run, clocking 7.71. She backed this up in the semi-final with a personal best of 7.62 which was more than enough to advance her to the final. Her final time was 7.64.
