World Triathlon Para Series Montreal

The World Triathlon Para Series visits Montreal this weekend, and Team Ireland are lining out. A strong team of seven athletes, including three PTVI pairings, have travelled to Canada to race.

COURSE PROFILE

The 750m (one lap) swim takes place in the Olympic Basin at the Parc Jean-Drapeau, followed by a 20,4km (5 laps) bike course. The PTS-PTVI bike course takes place on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, a clockwise 3.9km loop on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (CGV). While the two lap run course (5km) takes place on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and the path alongside the Olympic Basin.

Tom Williamson – PTS5

Tom will be carrying momentum off the back of his first World Para Series podium in Taranto and defending his European Bronze medal at the 2025 European Championships last month. Tom, who goes into this race ranked fourth, will have his eye on another podium performance and cementing his name as a World Triathlon Para Series contender.

Judith MacCombe and guide Eimear Nicholls – Women’s PTVI

Like Tom, Judith and Eimear can confidently toe the line following their double bronze medal performances from Taranto World Triathlon Para Series and claiming their first championship medal at the 2025 European Para Triathlon Championships last month. Judith and Eimear will be hoping to continue this fine form and continue to build their World Triathlon ranking and experience racing at World Series level.

Donnacha McCarthy and guide Sean Husband – Men’s PTVI

Donnacha and Sean have commenced their double racing block with a bronze medal finish at the 2025 World Triathlon Para Cup Magog. Donnacha and Sean in Montreal will be able to take confidence from their strong performance across swim, bike and run last weekend into this weekend’s test. With a season best World Para Triathlon ranking of 10th, they are positioning themselves very well for end of the season races and demonstrating solid consistency in their performances.

Chloe MacCombe and guide Aisling Wyer – Women’s PTVI

Montreal will see the second outing for new pairing Chloe and Aisling. They will carry lots of positives from their debut last month at the 2025 European Championships, where they finished in fifth position. This weekend the focus will be on a strong performance to maintain their position in the world rankings.

European Championships in Melilla, Spain

It’s been a big two weeks for the international team, as they took on the World Championships last week in Hamburg and are in Melilla, Spain for the European Championships this week.

Hamburg

In Hamburg, James Edgar lined up in a stacked Elite Men’s field on Saturday for World Triathlon Championship Series Hamburg, finishing 49th in his second WTCS race of the season.

James returned to action on Sunday, joining Erin McConnell, Hollie Elliott, and Russell White for the Mixed Team Relay race. Hamburg marked the first time that Ireland fielded a team in the Mixed Team Relay World Championships. Unfortunately lapped out on the final leg of the relay, the experience gained in Hamburg has established all important momentum to carry into this weekend’s European Championships in Melilla, Spain.

Hamburg also marked a career milestone for Russell White, who made his 130th World Triathlon start!

Luke McCarron was also in action over the weekend, finishing 31st at the Americas Triathlon Cup Magog. Luke is back in action this weekend at the Americas Triathlon Cup Montreal.

2025 Europe Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships, Melilla

The Europe Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships take place this weekend (19th – 20th July) in Melilla, Spain, and a squad of seven Team Ireland athletes will be racing across the elite, junior and mixed team relay events.

James Edgar – Elite Men

Having finished fourth in Melilla across super-sprint format last year, James Edgar will look to match that performance as he takes on the Elite Men’s Sprint race on Saturday evening.

Hollie Elliott – Elite Women

The race marks Hollie Elliott’s first senior individual championship appearance for Ireland. Elliott has shown strong form in recent European Cup races, racing aggressively from the front, and will look to carry that same approach into this weekend as the competition intensifies in Melilla.

Junior Men – Mathys Bocquet & Senan McDonnell

National Triathlon Centre (University of Limerick) athletes Senan McDonnell and Mathys Bocquet will compete in the Junior Men’s event on Saturday morning after qualifying through selection race Schull Centra Fastnet Triathlon, finishing in first and third place respectively. The pair will be targeting qualification for the Junior World Championships this weekend.

Bocquet & McDonnell will be building on their recent performances, with Senan finishing in P17 at the European Junior Cup in Wels last month, marking his first international race of the season. Mathys finished 19th in Caorle and 23rd in Holten at Junior European Cups.

Mixed Team Relay Squad:

  • Mathys Bocquet
  • Elizabeth Carr
  • James Edgar
  • Hollie Elliott
  • Senan McDonnell
  • Jonathan Oakey
  • Russell White

Ireland’s Mixed Team Relay squad will be finalised following Saturday’s individual events, with the team aiming for a strong performance to gain valuable points. Currently sitting 14th, Team Ireland will look to improve on last year’s 13th place finish.
