Triathlon Ireland International Athletes Weekend Round Up

ByEmma Porter |

Both junior and senior high performance squad members raced this past weekend, with the action taking place in Italy and Morocco.

European Triathlon Junior Cup Caorle

In Italy junior triathletes Mathys Bocquet, Ethan Doherty, Senan McDonnell and Sean McMahon were in Caorle for the 2023 Europe Triathlon Junior Cup, a first international race for all four athletes.

The junior athletes competed in super-sprint distance heats on Friday afternoon, covering a 300-metre swim, 9.5 kilometre bike ride, and a 1.9 kilometre run. The top 30 finishers advanced to the finals on Saturday.

Finishing best of the Irish was Predator Triathlon Club’s Mathys Bocquet who was 8th in his heat, missing out on the final by just a few seconds. The team gained important international experience and will have learned a lot from racing at this level. Well done everyone!

Africa Triathlon Cup M’Diq

On Sunday James Edgar, Luke McCarron, Jonathan Oakey & Russell White raced the standard distance 2023 Africa Triathlon Cup M’Diq, Morocco.

A strong swim and one of the quickest bike splits of the day saw Jonathan Oakey finish 13th in his debut international of the season. Oakey last raced in December where he was inside the top ten, ninth at Africa Triathlon Cup Dahka. The chase pack Oakey was working in caught the main group towards the end of the course after working well throughout. Jonathan reflects on his result;

“Very happy with the result, I had a bit of a slow start in the water but managed to find a good working group on the bike and we managed to get back up to the front. I then just left it all out there on the run! All in all, a good day out by the sea.”

In their second starts of the season, Russell White was 28th and Luke McCarron 40th. Not feeling 100% on the day, James Edgar made the tough decision to pull up after the bike leg.
