Two Irish riders will head to Turkey this week to compete in the UCI Track Nations Cup. Aoife O’Brien and Erin Creighton will don the green jersey once again as they compete against some of the world’s best in Konya.
Both riders recently represented Ireland at the UEC European Track Championships in Zolder, Belgium.
Both O’Brien and Creighton featured in the Team Pursuit squad in Belgium, and after qualifying for the semi-final with relative ease, eventually wound-up 8th overall. Creighton followed this with a strong performance in the first ever Women’s 1K TT, and narrowly missed out on a place in the final.
Creighton, also part of last year’s Paris Olympics squad, will compete in the Omnium in Konya, with her event taking place on Day 3 of the competition, Sunday March 16th. O’Brien meanwhile will compete in the Elimination race on Friday March 14th.
Track Head Coach Dan Henchy said, “There will only be one round of the Nations Cup series this year and the event will be held in another new venue for us in Konya, Turkey. We have two riders targeting the bunch races. Aoife will race the Elimination race after a strong showing in the same event in Grenchen before Christmas, and Erin will make her Nations Cup Omnium debut following on from a strong top 10 showing at last year’s U23 Euros. The velodrome in Konya sits just over 1000m above sea level so we’re hopeful of some fast times and it looks like there’ll be a strong international field, so it presents an ideal opportunity for us to continue building the strength in depth of our women’s track endurance squad.”
