Waterford Duathlon Race Report

ByEmma Porter |

On Saturday, the 10th of February, over 220 athletes took to the coastal town of Tramore to compete in the first Duathlon of the season. The morning was filled with a great atmosphere as the community gathered once again, undeterred by the rain, which failed to dampen spirits.

The race kicked off at 10am, where the athletes began their first 5km run. It kicked off with a mass start on Estuary Road, tracing along the scenic route of the estuary. The athletes completed a smaller loop in Riverstown Business Park, before one larger loop through Tramore, which then finished along the promenade.

Hegarty from Watergrasshill AC & TC was the first into T1, completing the run in 15 minutes and 36 seconds. Coming out of T1 the athletes moved onto the bike course, completing a 16km cycle, an 8 km out and back route with the turnaround point in Somerville. Hegarty continued to lead, but Eden Tri Club’s Bagnall was very close behind.

Finishing out the race with a 4km run, following the same course as the first run, excluding the business park loop. Spirits were high as the athletes crossed the finish line on the promenade, with friends and family cheering loudly over the wind. Hegarty was first over the line, with Bagnall and Carlow TC’s Bailey following soon after. Roberts from Piranha Triathlon Club was the first woman to cross the finish line, followed by Casey and Moynihan.

Spectators continued to cheer as over 200 athletes crossed the finish line. The Waterford Duathlon saw a great start to the season and set the tone for an exciting Duathlon National Series to come!
