On September 3rd, a group of seventeen women from Westport Triathlon Club and Covey Wheelers Cycling Club collectively called ‘Westport Women on Wheels’ will embark on the iconic challenge of cycling 605km from Mizen Head to Malin Head, raising funds for both Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation and Mayo Rape Crisis Centre.
The idea for the female-only cycle is the brainchild of triathlete and IRONMAN Colette Sweeney of Westport Leisure Centre, who is leading the group, speaking about the challenge she said
“When you’re part of a club and you all come together for a good cause, it brings the entire community together,” she said. “Mizen to Malin is a legendary journey across the length of Ireland, spanning 605 km from the southernmost point to the northernmost point of the island. We’ve been training hard for the last few months, and despite the bad weather over the Summer, we’ve always managed to get out as a group a couple of times a week on top of the individual training.”
Ahead of the epic cycle, the group have clocked up more than 40,000km in training, cycling up and down the hills of Mayo and participating in cycling sportifs around the country, from the Tour de Connemara and the Cunga RAM in Galway to the Gran Fondo in Sligo and Ring of Clare, closer to home Westportif and Ballina Salmon Sportif provided the perfect training ground for the challenge ahead.
The Schedule for their Mizen to Malin Challenge will see the group complete a short 26km from Mizen Head to Schull before embarking on some big days in the saddle over the following four days.
- 147 km from Schull to Charleville in Cork (September 4th)
- 157km from Charleville to Athlone (September 5th)
