The 2025 Mare Nostrum Swim Tour continued this evening in Barcelona, with a host of Irish swimmers in action on the final night of racing before the team departs for Canet-en-Roussillon for the third and final leg of the meet.

Following his gold medal win in last night’s 800m Freestyle, Daniel Wiffen was back on the blocks in Barcelona. The 23-year-old entered tonight’s 400m Freestyle Final as the top seed, following his morning swim of 3:51.24. Wiffen led for most of the race before his Tunisian and Italian counterparts pulled ahead, with Wiffen finishing just behind them to claim the bronze medal in 3:50.55. The Olympic and World champion will return to the blocks in Canet-en-Roussillon as he continues to fine-tune his form ahead of the World Championships in July.

Fellow double Olympian Danielle Hill was also back in action, this time in the 50m Freestyle Final. The Larne native touched the wall in 25.50 (7th), dropping 0.08 seconds from her morning swim – an important step in this key preparation meet as she ramps up her preparation ahead of her benchmark meet in Singapore. Hill later returned to the pool to compete in the 100m Backstroke, clocking 1:03.54.

Ellie McCartney stood out in both her heat and final swims in the 200m Breaststroke, gaining valuable international race experience ahead of a busy summer that includes both the European U23 Championships and the World Aquatics Championships. McCartney clocked an impressive 2:28.18 in her heat, before returning to the blocks tonight and lowering her time to 2:25.46 – just missing out on a podium finish in fourth place.

Jack Cassin, another swimmer bound for Singapore, competed in tonight’s 200m Butterfly Final. The National Centre (Limerick) athlete shaved over a second off his heat swim, finishing in 2:00.03 and narrowly missing out on third place by a mere 0.1 of a second.

Irish international representatives Maria Godden (100m Backstroke, 1:03.46), Eoin Corby (100m Breaststroke, 1:02.44), and Lottie Cullen (100 Backstroke, 1:03.21) also featured in tonight’s B Finals.

The attention will now turn to Canet-en-Roussillon, with racing resuming on Saturday and Sunday.
